Jean O'Donnell

Councillor Jean O'Donnell

Councillor Jean O'Donnell represents Billingham South Ward and was elected in 1991.

I have lived in my ward since 1952. I am a retired Legal Secretary and became a Borough Councillor in 1991 representing, first of all St Aidens ward for four years and thereafter St. Cuthbert's ward, now called Billingham South, to the present day. So as you can imagine I have a wide experience of most Council related matters.

I was Mayor of the Borough in 2002 - 2003 and was also the Mayoress in 1996. I sit as Chairman of the People Select Committee which covers arts, leisure and culture among other topics and am a long-standing member of the Cleveland Fire authority where I was Chairman for two years. I also sit on the Tees Port Health Authority and have served as Chairman on that committee.

I am also a Member of Billingham Town Council and I am also Hon Sec. of the St. Cuthberts Allotment Association.  I am an honorary member of the garden section of the Old Billingham Carnival and Garden Show, which is held annually during the first week of September. The show has been going for many years and exhibitors come from across the region. Our leeks and onions are legendary. The dahlia and chrysanthemum section of the show are stunning, and the Stockton Borough Council Mayor usually presents the prizes. If you would like more information about the carnival and show please feel free to get in touch.

I also support the National Get Hooked on Fishing Project which has a regional project based in Billingham. The project aims to create opportunities for young people by delivering fun training associated with the sport of angling.

For relaxation I like to paint land and waterscapes in watercolours and my friends and family tell me that I am definitely improving! The painting group that I belong to meet in St Cuthbert's Church Hall on Saturday afternoons at 1pm and we would welcome new members of all abilities.

I also also make jam and lemon curd and exhibit at the Billingham Show.
