Temporary traffic lights will be in place on a section of the A1185 Seal Sands Link Road from next week as essential maintenance work on two bridges gets under way.

The work, just east of the entrance to Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park, will start on Monday (September 27) and is set to be finished just before Christmas.

There will be temporary traffic lights and a lane closure on that stretch of road throughout the work, which is being carried out by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.

The nearby layby on the west bound side of the road will also be closed for the duration of the work as it is needed as a site compound.

Councillor Mike Smith, the Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "This essential maintenance work will protect the structural integrity of the two bridges and we're also taking the opportunity to put in some drainage improvements, upgrade the safety barriers and resurface the road.

"We'll need to do a full overnight closure of that stretch of road when we come to do the resurfacing - that'll happen at the end of November and there'll be on site signage in advance, with signed diversions in place during the closure.

"There'll inevitably be some disruption but we'll be doing everything we can to keep it to a minimum and are arranging for the temporary traffic lights to be manually controlled during peak hours.

"We thank people in advance for their patience while this essential work is carried out."
