Abnormal loads

We need to be notified of abnormal loads in advance so that we can check that the movement doesn't cause stress on our bridges and structures and will not damage any of our street furniture.

The Road Vehicles (Authorisation of Special Types) (General) Order 2003 (more commonly referred to as The STGO) governs the movement of abnormal loads and depending on the vehicle weight, length or height requires hauliers who intend to transport an abnormal load to pre-notify Highway, Bridge and Police Authorities.

Abnormal loads exceeding the limits covered under The STGO can be moved on the roads if a Special Order has been issued.

For further information on the movement of abnormal loads visit the governments website or email abnormal.loads@stockton.gov.uk

How to notify us

Hauliers must submit abnormal load notification containing the specific details required by the STGO.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • a list of all the authorities to which the notice is given
  • details of the vehicle or vehicle combination including vehicle registration number, type of vehicle, load dimensions, gross weight, number of axles, number of wheels per axle, axle weights and spacings
  • details of vehicle user
  • details of intended journey including start and finish point, intended date and time of departure, detailed description of route
