Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council has submitted a planning application to develop a piece of land a stone's throw from Yarm High Street as a new long-stay car park.

The site, off West Street, is occupied by the Arncliffe Buildings and subject to planning approval, a section of it would make way for a 59-space long-stay pay and display car park.

Members of the Council's Cabinet approved lease arrangements for the site when they met in February.

Councillor Mike Smith, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "We know that people have been very keen for more long-stay parking options in Yarm and I'd like to thank them for their patience while these plans have been in development.

"We are now seeking planning permission and subject to approval this site will provide 59 much needed parking spaces for shoppers, visitors and people who work in Yarm.

"I'm pleased we have reached a position to submit detailed plans and though we understand there's more to be done to relieve the pressure of parking in Yarm, we're hopeful that this new site will make a positive difference to the town."
