Councillors to consider review of Stockton-on-Tees' Local Plan

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet will consider the future of the Borough's Local Plan at its next meeting in January.

Local authorities with a responsibility for planning must have a Local Plan in place to provide the framework for future development across their area.

 National legislation sets out that Councils must 'review' their local plans at least once every five years from their adoption to ensure they remain fit for purpose. 

Stockton on Tees Local Plan review needs to be complete by January, 31, 2024.

Councillor Nigel Cooke, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing, said: "We're required by Central Government to review our Local Plan every five years.

"Since its adoption in 2019 there has been significant changes which alter the effectiveness of our policies, such as changes in national planning reforms, shopping habits and environmental considerations.

"This has led us to believe that now is a good time to start a full update of the Local Plan as it will offer an opportunity to update and align the Borough's planning policies with a number of our key priorities to tackle climate change, address inequalities and drive forward economic growth and regeneration."

During the Cabinet meeting on January, 18 Cabinet will be asked to agree the review findings of the Stockton on Tees Local Plan. If agreed, Cabinet will recommend to Council that it considers a full update of the Stockton on Tees Local Plan.
