"A positive benefit for businesses, residents and visitors" - Norton's high street improvement works are completed
Work to improve Norton High Street as part of a revamp of the Borough's town centres has been completed.
The improvements, providing better traffic flow and parking and more pedestrianised areas, are set to offer more opportunities for the town's residents, businesses and visitors such as leisure activities, pop-up markets and outdoor seating.
A new northbound one-way system is now also in place at the southern section of the High Street, allowing for more flexible spaces in the area.
The work will help to enhance Norton's popularity as a daytime and evening destination and allow further growth to an already thriving area.
Among the improvements are:
- a large pedestrianised space in the Harland Place area to allow for provision of events
- a new one-way system and road alignment
- more pedestrian-focused areas to improve visitor experience
- improved parking for vehicles, taxis and loading with six extra spaces created
- resurfaced car parking area in front of Boots
- new benches, bins and greenery
A new speed limit of 20mph has also been introduced from north of the duck pond to the most southern section of the High Street, as part of efforts to create a safer environment in the town centre.
The scheme was delivered following the Let's Talk About Our Towns public consultation and further engagement with residents and businesses which identified the need for improvements to parking and traffic flow.
It also complements the work to the duck pond at the north end of the High Street, where a new fountain was installed, and wider surface and path improvements took place.
It's all part of how the Council are further developing the Borough's six town centres to ensure they are vibrant places, which are economically successful and fit for the future.
Councillor Nigel Cooke, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing, said: "Norton is thriving, with many people wanting to enjoy what it's fantastic High Street has to offer, but with this success comes necessary infrastructure improvements that need to be made to ensure everyone continues to have the best experience here.
"This work is so important for futureproofing Norton and ensuring it is fit for purpose for future generations. It's fantastic to see the finished result.
"These improvements will add to the wonderful additions to the duck pond, delivering a positive benefit to Norton's residents, businesses and visitors."
One of the events which could benefit from increased flexible spaces in the future is the Love Norton Advent Window Trail, which takes place every December in the town.
The event encourages visitors to follow a creative trail of illuminated windows created by Norton's many small businesses.
The scheme, which began in March, was delivered in partnership with Esh Construction.
