Getting a phone call about your Council Tax

We've started using a new phone service to contact customers who have a Council Tax debt. This is not a scam.

  • if you get a phone call, you will be asked to press 1 to speak to an advisor at Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council
  • if you get a voicemail, you will be given a number to call to speak to an advisor at Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council
  • if you get a text message, you will be given a number to call to speak to an advisor at Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council

Please take this opportunity to speak to an advisor who may be able to offer support to help you to pay your Council Tax.

First reminder

If you miss a payment, we will send you a Council Tax reminder notice. It will ask you to bring your account up to date within seven days. If you do not pay the amount shown on your reminder within seven days, you will lose your right to pay by instalments and you will receive a summons.

Second and final reminder

If you pay after a first reminder but then miss another payment, we will send you a second and final reminder. It will ask you to bring your payments up to date within seven days.

If you do not pay the amount shown on your second reminder within seven days, you will lose your right to pay by instalments and you will receive a summons.

Final notice

If all of your instalments are still due or you miss a further instalment, we will issue a final notice. If you receive a final notice and do not pay the outstanding balance in full within seven days, you will receive a summons.

Court summons

If you do not pay the outstanding balance on a reminder or final notice, we will send you a court summons for non-payment of Council Tax which will incur extra costs. Your attendance at court is only required if you have a dispute that cannot be resolved with the Council.
