Council to award Honorary Alderman status to the late Julia Cherrett

A long-serving former Stockton-on-Tees councillor is to be awarded posthumous Honorary Alderman status.

Julia Cherrett was elected in 2005 and represented the Bishopsgarth and Elm Tree ward, while also serving on a number of council and partner committees including Executive Scrutiny Committee, the Fire Authority, and Stockton Home Safety Association.

She died suddenly in October 2020, aged 61.

The nomination to award her posthumous Honorary Alderman status was approved at a Special Council meeting yesterday (March 23).

The Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Kevin Faulks, said: "It was a terrible shock when Julia passed away and it's testament to her passion and commitment as a ward councillor that she'll be awarded Honorary Alderman status.

"She was well-known in the area for her range of charity work and Julia always served the people of her ward with the utmost dedication.

"This is certainly a fitting tribute for Julia and recognition for her dedication to the community."

The Honorary Alderman status for Councillor Cherrett will be conferred at the Council's Annual General Meeting in May.

Former councillors Kathryn Nelson and Paul Baker will also be conferred as Honorary Aldermen at the same meeting. Their awards were agreed by a Special Council meeting in January 2020 but the ceremony was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
