Action is being taken to ensure Yarm Station car park is accessible for genuine rail users as increasing numbers of people return to work.

From Monday 11 April a charge of £1.50 will be introduced to park there from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday.

The introduction of charging brings the facility on Green Lane in line with other long stay car parks in Yarm and will control demand from non-rail users.

Before the pandemic the station car park was increasingly being used by non-rail vehicles, and now people are returning to work and travelling in greater numbers it is hoped this will prevent this happening again.

Councillor Mike Smith, the Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "Any use of the car park that isn't for rail users, by even just a few drivers, can have a major impact on those who genuinely need to park there to use rail services.

"By introducing this small fee and bringing the car park into line with others in Yarm we hope we can minimise any misuse through enforcement and keep the car park available for those who really need it."

A 'Control of Use' order will also allow enforcement action to be taken against any unauthorised, obstructive and inconsiderate parking - and drivers will face a minimum £50 fine for flouting the new rules.

'No Waiting and No Loading at any time' restrictions will also be introduced on sections of Green Lane, including the junctions of Britannia Ave and Davenport Road, to deter  people from parking in nearby areas instead.

The new tariff will be payable by cash or through the RingGo app. Season ticket parking will also be available. For details visit our Car parking page.
