Remember Leslie Brown's toy shop? Or the monkey man and his parrot in Stockton Market? Have you heard the story about an unimpressed matron ordering Cliff Richard out of Stockton and Thornaby Hospital when he turned up to visit a band mate out of visiting hours?

These are just some of the memories captured in a fascinating local history exhibition opened by the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Kevin Faulks, today, (Friday, April 29).

The 'In Living Memory' exhibition at Preston Park Museum celebrates the stories of people who have lived, worked, studied or visited Stockton-on-Tees Borough.

Over recent months, the Borough's seven Community Partnerships have collected scores of personal memories, revealing favourite pastimes, treasured places to visit, proud and funny moments.

Interactive displays will showcase these memories, bringing the past to life and reminding people of yesteryear with a range of games, costumes and props. And for those visiting the exhibition there'll be chance to sit on a reflection memory bench and think about their own story, writing a memory on a postcard as they leave.

Councillor Bob Cook, Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said: "This exhibition really highlights some fascinating memories and celebrates Stockton-on-Tees' hidden stories and history.

"We wanted to make sure that peoples' memories are not forgotten and remain in living memory for years to come so it's great that so many people came forward to share tales of meeting friends in dance halls, nightclubs and theatres of the past, of well-known shops and market stalls and plenty of childhood memories such as visiting Stockton and Thornaby baths. Thank you to the Community Partnerships for weaving all these stories together.

"I'd urge everyone to come and take a look. Whether this is to reminisce or to learn something new about the recent history of our Borough I'm sure you'll be amazed about some of the stories on offer."

The 'In Living Memory' exhibition will be held at Preston Park Museum from 29 April to 16 May 2022.  It will then go on tour across the Borough.

To visit the exhibition, buy your museum ticket on arrival or show a valid museum pass for entry. Visit the Preston Park website for opening times and prices.
