Tributes have been paid to former councillor and Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Ann Cains, who died on Wednesday (May 25), aged 85.

Ann was elected to represent the Glebe ward in 1995 and four years later, the Norton West ward when her husband, Dick, was elected to serve the ward alongside her.

She served as Mayor in 2003/04 and also sat on numerous committees including a period as the Chair of Health Select Committee.

She retired as a councillor in 2011 and was awarded Honorary Alderman status in September that year.

Councillor Bob Cook, Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said: "I've known Ann for years as we got into local politics at a similar time in the early 1980s.

"She got elected to represent the Glebe ward and her passion was very much working as hard as possible for the people in her ward.

"Alongside her husband, Dick, she dedicated herself to public service.

"She was also a school governor for many years and was active in the community both before becoming a councillor and indeed, after.

"She'll be a huge miss and our condolences go out to her family at this very sad time."
