Whether it's a time of sorrow or a time of joy, residents using Stockton-on-Tees Register Office can rely on some of the best service in the country, show new figures.

The Borough has ranked among the best performing authorities in both the region and across the country for birth and death registrations.

The authority has beaten national targets for 2021/22 in all three performance areas - birth registrations, still-birth registrations and death registrations.

Stockton-on-Tees is the highest performing registration district in the North East for death registrations and on comparison with same size districts is the top performing authority throughout England and Wales.

It is also ranked in the top ten authorities in the country for birth registrations.

Councillor Norma Stephenson, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Access, Communities and Community Safety, said: "People need to use our registration service at some of the most joyous and also saddest times of their lives, and rightly expect the best service possible.

"So well done to our dedicated staff who are clearly offering an exceptional service supporting people through these key life events. It is a testament to the team that they have not only carried on meeting national standards during the pandemic, but they have actually overachieved during this difficult period for register offices throughout the country."

Each register office within England & Wales is heavily monitored on performance by General Register Office (GRO) for birth, still-birth and death registrations.

National targets say 98% of all births and still-births must be registered within 42 days and 90% of deaths (with no coronial involvement) must be registered within 5  days.

Stockton-on-Tees Register Office exceeded these targets being 99% compliant in birth registrations, 100% compliant with still-birth registrations and 96% compliant with death registrations.
