"Keep up the good work!" Schools in the Borough continue strong performance, despite coronavirus pandemic

Schools across the Stockton-on-Tees Borough continue to show "a very strong performance", a new report has revealed.

Figures show 93 per cent of the Borough's children attend a primary school rated "good" or "outstanding" by Ofsted, which is above the regional and national average.

The number of children achieving a good level of development in Maths and English during the Early Years Foundation Stage is 68.1 per cent, compared to 65 per cent nationally.

And 64 per cent of children have reached the expected Key Stage 2 standard for Reading, Writing and Maths. The national average is 59 per cent.

In secondary schools, 71.5 per cent of pupils achieved a 9-4 grade in English and Maths.

This is a significant improvement from 67.5 per cent in 2019 and is expected to beat the 2022 national average.

Councillor Lisa Evans, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: "There's no doubt what a significant impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on the Borough's pupils and schools, so the very strong performance of our schools is really encouraging to hear.

"We know the national picture is showing the development of younger children has been particularly affected by Covid, so we're tackling the issue head-on through school-based support and interventions.

"And of course despite these really encouraging results across the board, we know we must not be complacent and will continue to support the Borough's children in any way we can.

"As always, I feel extremely proud of all our school leaders and staff and pupils - as well as the parents, carers and governors who continue to support them.

"Keep up the good work, everyone!"

The report on the Borough's schools will be considered by Councillors at the Council's Cabinet on Thursday (October 13).
