Members of Bright Minds Big Futures are presented with the Queen's Award

The Royal seal of approval has been given to a dedicated youth-led movement who work tirelessly to support young people growing up across Stockton-on-Tees.

Bright Minds, Big Futures (BMBF) were presented with The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service by Mrs Johanna Ropner, the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, His Majesty The King's representative, at a special ceremony at Preston Park Museum.

The prestigious accolade, awarded to BMBF earlier this year, is the highest given to volunteer groups across the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.

Formed in 2017, the multi award-winning group of young volunteers works with the Council to make Stockton-on-Tees a great place to grow up.

Led by a 'Big Committee' which mirrors the Council's own Cabinet set-up, the group delivers a 'Big Plan' which includes setting out their priorities for the Borough.

And that's seen young volunteers grow food for local food banks, raise money for charities, and grill councillors, MPs, and police chiefs at 'Youth Question Time' events.

Chair of BMBF, Sally Sheridan, said: "It's a huge privilege to receive such a prestigious award which recognises the hard work of all of the members of BMBF, especially throughout the pandemic. I am so immensely proud of you all!"

The Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Ross Patterson, attended the award presentation alongside Council Leader, Councillor Bob Cook and Deputy Leader, Councillor Lisa Evans.

The Mayor said: "These remarkable young people are a credit to the Borough and this huge honour recognises their commitment to support other young people across Stockton-on-Tees.

"The presentation of this award was an opportunity for us to celebrate BMBF members past and present who have given up their own time to make a significant impact here in the Borough, but to also say thank you to all members of BMBF, and partners that have helped them on their incredible journey - and long may it continue!"

The Lord-Lieutenant, Mrs Johanna Ropner, said: "It was wonderful to hear of BMBF's amazing achievements and the issues that are important to these dedicated young people.

"What has impressed me is not only their great energy, creativity and commitment in the community, but also their informed and valuable contribution to the work of the Council and local government."

The Queen's Award is the latest in a string of accolades for BMBF which includes a British Youth Council Award, High Sheriff Award and Mayor's Civic Award.
