Warm Homes Healthy People (WHHP) is set to be a vital source of help for those at a heightened risk of the effects of colder weather.

A range of residents will be eligible for the scheme, which will be running until March 2022.

Here's all you need to know.

What is WHHP and what support is available?

The programme provides a range of help for those whose physical or mental health suffers with conditions made worse by the cold and require affordable warmth.

The support includes emergency heating, energy debt advice and boiler servicing and repairs for eligible homes.

WHHP is led by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council alongside a range of partners, including Cleveland Fire Brigade and Stockton and District Advice and Information Service (SDAIS).

Am I eligible for support?

You can access support if any of the following apply to you:

  • You're aged over 75.
  • You're in receipt of disability benefits.
  • You have a long term illness made worse by the cold.
  • You're living with a child (under 5) who has a long term illness made worse by the cold.
  • You have dementia.

I think I'm eligible - what should I do?

For more information, call WHHP on 01642 528215.

The phoneline is open from 8.30am until 5pm from Monday to Thursday and from 8.30am until 4.30pm on a Friday.

What do Councillors think?

Councillor Jim Beall, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Health, Leisure and Culture, said: "Protecting our most vulnerable residents is absolutely vital and Warm Homes Healthy People has given a lifeline to so many people over the years since it was first launched in 2012.

"The scheme last year managed to secure £400,000 in unclaimed benefits for residents and it's heartening to know how beneficial it proves to be year in, year out.

"Nobody should be left without a warm home this winter - so please get in touch with the team if you need some support and you think you're eligible."
