Sensory and physical
There is a wide range of sensory and physical difficulties that can affect children and young people across the ability range.
To support children and young people with these difficulties, small changes may be needed to:
- their curriculum
- their study programme
- their physical environment
These adaptions may be required as reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010.
Children and young people with a visual impairment (VI) or a hearing impairment (HI) may need specialist support and equipment to access their learning. Children and young people with a multi-sensory impairment (MSI) have a combination of visual and hearing difficulties, which makes it more difficult for them to access the curriculum or study programme. Some children and young people with a physical disability (PD) need additional on-going support and equipment to access all the opportunities available to their peers.
Disabled children and young people
Many disabled children and young people also have SEN. Access arrangements and other adjustments should be considered as part of the SEN planning and review. Special education provision may not be needed if steps to ensure access to mainstream education and opportunities is sufficient.
