Demolition of Castlegate Shopping Centre
Plans to transform Stockton High Street include the Castlegate Shopping Centre and Swallow Hotel being demolished.
Why has Castlegate Shopping Centre been demolished?
Stockton has seen vacancy rates rise to almost three times the national average due to changing consumer habits and old, poorly laid out retail units with many that are too big for modern needs.
Retail was spread across a large area, with two main shopping centres 'book ending' the High Street. The plans to tackle the town's empty shops were created after the Council bought the Castlegate Centre and Wellington Square in September 2019.
The public were asked for views in the 'Let's Talk About Our Towns' consultation in an opportunity to change the town. The responses revealed there was public support for putting the site to a different use.
