The Bread and Butter Thing

Get your weekly groceries for a fraction of the cost.

The Bread and Butter Thing offers high-quality, low-cost food to everyone in Stockton-on-Tees.

For £8.50, you can pick up 3 bags of food worth roughly £35 including fresh fruit and veg, chilled food for the fridge, and cupboard staples like cereal. You can also pay just £5 for an individual bag or £17 for a six bag 'family' deal.

On average, you can expect to save around £25 versus buying the products you receive if you picked them up at a supermarket. The food comes from supermarkets, factories and farms, meaning you can help reduce waste while also reducing your cost of living.

How to join

It's free to join with no commitment - just follow the instructions and turn up at your chosen hub to collect your bags. What's more, everyone who signs up before 22 December 2023 will get their first order free!

  1. Text 07860 063304 with your name, postcode, and where you'll be collecting from: Stockton, Thornaby or Billingham
  2. Select the size of order you want to receive: family - £8.50, individual - £5, or large family - £17. A vegetarian option is also available.
  3. We'll send you a text two days before your collection day to see if you want an order. Just reply "yes" by 10am the next day. We'll deliver your order to the hub ready for collection.
  4. Collect and pay for your goods. You can pay using cash or card, and we accept Healthy Start vouchers too. Someone else can collect on your behalf if you can't make it and we also accept Healthy Start Vouchers.

The food changes daily meaning your bags will change from week to week. Most members buy food from TBBT and then 'top up' from the supermarket once they have seen what's in the bags.
