The once-in-a-decade survey has taken place since 1801 and gives the most accurate estimate of all people and households in England and Wales.

Letters containing a code to fill in the Census online will be posted between March 3 and March 13.

Residents can then use their computer, tablet or phone to fill in the survey.

Councillor Bob Cook, Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said: "This year's Census will be a little bit of history as it's the first to be run predominantly online.

"It will take just a few minutes to use your unique online access code and fill in the survey.

"Of course if you don't have the technology then there'll still be the option to request a paper form.

"When your letter arrives, it's important to fill in the Census as you run the risk of being fined and even getting a criminal record if you don't.

"The information you give is very useful to help decide how things like schools, doctors surgeries and emergency services are planned and funded."

Census results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years and kept safe for future generations.
