Local election in Hartburn is "countermanded" following death of a candidate
The sad death of a candidate in the forthcoming Local Elections in Stockton-on-Tees Borough will mean that the election for councillors for the Hartburn ward will be delayed.
Following Mike Elliott's death, the election in the Hartburn ward has been 'countermanded', which means it will not take place on the original date of Thursday, May 4, 2023.
This is a requirement set out in election law, in the Local Elections (Principal Areas) (England and Wales) Rules 2006.
All other Borough and Parish elections will take place as planned.
The notice of election for the three councillors for the ward will be published on Wednesday, May 17. New poll cards and postal votes will be sent to electors in due course.
Returning Officer for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Mike Greene, said: "We are saddened to hear of the death of Mike Elliott and send our deepest condolences to his family and friends."
