Scaffolding will be appearing on Stockton Town Hall soon - here's why

Scheduled maintenance work on Stockton Town Hall is set to begin later this month.

The essential work, due to start on Monday, January 30, will see the installation of scaffolding and a temporary roof.

This is to allow leadwork to the roof and the spire to be updated. Sections of roof tiles will also be replaced, and lightning protection will be installed too.  

During the conservation work, structural improvements will also be made to the clock tower before it is redecorated.

Councillor Nigel Cooke, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing, said: "This project will require a lot of scaffolding, which will be visible to people visiting the High Street for the coming months. 

"Materials used in historic buildings, such as lead, naturally age and come to the end of their lives which is why the planned repairs are necessary."

The maintenance, which will ensure the building is water-tight, is due to be completed by autumn 2023.
