Cranes on the way: more than 200 tonnes of steelwork set to arrive as Globe restoration gathers pace
There will be a lane closure outside Stockton's famous Globe from next week in preparation for the arrival of more than 200 tonnes of steelwork.
The closure is needed from Monday (16 September) until the end of November so that a crane can move the steel safely into 153 High Street, the building next door to the Globe.
The restored Globe will open in November 2020 as the biggest live entertainment venue between Newcastle and Leeds.
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing, Councillor Nigel Cooke, said: "This is an exciting step forward for the Globe restoration project and one that will create an exciting, new large extension to the Globe, also operating on occasions as an independent venue at 153 High Street.
"One of the challenges of the restoration is making sure we can safely move materials onto the site but we are doing all we can to do this in a way that minimises disruption to people visiting the town centre."
How will road users be affected?
The road outside the Globe will be reduced to a single lane but there will be a contraflow in place so that drivers can continue to travel in both directions.
Traffic will not be able to do a u-turn at Maxwell's Corner while the lane closure is in place.
Will there be any impact on bus services?
Arriva services 7/7A, 17A and X66/X67 that currently u-turn at the Maxwell's Corner traffic signals will only serve the High Street in the southbound direction, using their normal boarding stops. Passengers arriving in Stockton may also find it convenient to use the bus stop outside the Department of Work and Pensions office on Bridge Road.
All other services will operate through Stockton High Street as normal.
What about pedestrians?
The path outside the Globe will be closed and signs will be in place to direct pedestrians to a safe, alternative walking route.
The Globe restoration is being funded by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and a £4.5million National Lottery grant through the National Lottery Heritage Fund's Heritage Enterprise scheme.
