Landmarks to be lit red in support of anti-racism campaign

The lighting will mark the campaign's annual Wear Red Day, with councillors and council staff being encouraged to wear the colour and make a donation to the charity.

There'll also be a host of fundraising activities throughout the day, including a 5k riverside relay.

Councillor Bob Cook, Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said: "We're always very proud to back the Show Racism the Red Card campaign. It's a great charity that has helped and educated so many people in relation to all forms of racism.

"We've got lots planned and I must thank Councillor Norma Stephenson who once again, has done a brilliant job in organising our events. All donations will help the charity in its aim of stamping out racism altogether.

"We'll also be using our feature lighting to mark the occasion, this being one of a number of great causes we recognise in this way throughout the year."

Photographs and videos will be shared on the Council's social media channels using the #WRD19 hashtag.

Established in 1996, Show Racism the Red Card uses the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society.

Across Britain, the charity delivers training to more than 50,000 people every year.
