Work under way on £1million school hall for Conyers
Steelwork is rising from the ground as work begins on a new state-of-the-art school hall for Conyers in Yarm.
The £1million hall will be able to transform into a multipurpose space with 250 capacity seating for performances, activities, assemblies and examinations.
It will also contain state of the art changing rooms and an activity studio, available for use by the local community with the aim of tackling inactivity among young people and hard to reach groups to improve their health and wellbeing.
The construction of the hall forms part of a £37million programme of investment announced in 2017 to improve, expand and rebuild schools across the Borough.
Councillor Lisa Evans, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: "It's fantastic to see work getting started on what is a much needed facility both for the school and the local community. I'm sure it will be very popular and bring huge benefits for the people who use it.
"Our programme of major investment has already seen a number of improvements, expansions and rebuilds delivered at nurseries and schools across Stockton-on-Tees - including Northfield School and Sports College, Crooksbarn Primary, Preston Primary, Billingham South Community Primary and Pentland Primary.
"These significant improvements show that, although councils no longer have the power to build new schools, we are absolutely committed to providing enough school places with fantastic facilities for the children and young people who are the future of our thriving Borough."
The Chair of Governors at Conyers School, Dr Julia Ardley, said: "We are very excited about the new hall, which will finally allow the school to make the best use of all its facilities. The new studio and changing rooms will also greatly improve our after school community provision, for the many local groups in our Go Sports programme."
A range of other improvements are now in the planning and design stages with work either due to begin or recently started such as major enhancements at Our Lady and St Bede Catholic Academy to provide a new sports hall, main entrance and refurbish classrooms.
